I've owned my house for about 11 years. This is my first home and I chose to live in the city so it was an older home build in 1941.

I remember going to a home buyers class and going to lots of open houses (I think I saw aobut 70+ houses) before I selected a real estate agent. The first agent I worked, I didn't like so I went with another agent. After about 15 houses, I made an offer on a house that was on the market for 1 day. At the time, I didn't think I would be living in the place for 10+ years and the thought didn't occur to me that I could remodel the home. What I'm basically saying is that remodeling a home was not in my mind when I purchased my house.

Anyone living an old home, you get accustomed to the quirkiness of your home. For example, the pedestal sink in my bathroom was cracked. It was a really bad crack and it was annoying but I lived with it. The hot water in the bathroom sink trickled and was really annoying but I got used to it. A lot of the doors and windows in the house didn't open/close properly. I never used my front door and I didn't use it for 11 years. I went in and out of the house through a side door. The door bells didn't work so I got used to it. 3 or 4 years into living in the house, I noticed in the mornings when leaving for work that my car had water on it. It took me a while to figure out I had a water leak from the bathroom which was above my garage. At first I thought it was the toilet so we replaced the toilet wax and the leak appeared to stop. Soon, the water on the car reappeared. I concluded the leak was coming from the pipes for the shower so I stopped taking showers in the bathroom and I started taking showers in the bathroom downstairs in the basement. Before I remodeled the bathroom, I got used to taking showers in the basement. I did this for like 6 years. Other things that didn't work were the dish washer (I have to admit my mom never used the dish washer and so I didn't really care that it didn't work).

Things finally changed when the world of remodeling appeared to me. What got me going down this journey was the fact that one of my clothes friends is a contractor. This opened up a lot of possibilities for my home which I never realized. I didn't have to live in a home like this and that I could make the home into something that I would enjoy living in.

Next blog starts my thoughts and experiences for remodeling your home....
